Car Washing and the Ecology

I decided to write about a topic that gets a lot of lip service but not much action : drinking water and washing cars. Well , make no mistake , I'm not a tree hugger , I think it 's time we all had some knowledge of a subject that affects us all .

In 1972, the Clean Water Act from the U.S. EPA (CWA ) went . It was developed as the "cornerstone of Oberflächengewässerschutzin the United States. " In the first decades of the law, focused efforts to regulate discharges from point sources, such as treatment plants, municipal wastewater and traditional furniture and industrial facilities , little attention paid to runoff from streets , construction sites , farms and other sources. This has changed . Since the 1980s , the address polluted runoff have sought increased significantly.

The shift in focus from high-volume EPA Abflussquellenauf a small volume sources begins to take effect in mobile retailers that water recovery systems are supposedly using . However, this federal mandate of the few municipalities (especially in Texas and California ) holds.

As the U.S. EPA sets its mission to enforce the CWA , I think both mobile and residential draftsmen owner / tenant is strictly regulated in order to comply with the law. For me the question is , why do we have to wait to be told ? If we know what to do cleaning Autowaschseifenund contaminate surface water , we do not have a responsibility now to do something about it?

These questions have been rolling in my head for a while, so I thought to clean our cars on the different methods that we have, without the pollution of our waters (groundwater , for that matter) . Obviously , quick detail spray around for a long time, and this is an option, albeit an expensive one . I think the problem may have been the genesis of a dozen or more spray and wipe products that will make the market for those who have taken " waterless wash " .

I guess a spray and wipe waterless wash product is good, and perhaps better than the traditional washing soap and water method , but not sure . While this method does not contaminate surface waters, I do not think it is preserved , either.

Consider a typical wash and clean without water spray is probably five fifty six microfiber towels and an equal number of ounces of spray and wipe products . Your car is clean, but now what ? I mean , what do you do with this wet, dirty towels saturated chemistry ? My guess is that most people are going to wash them.

Super , since water will protection .

Conversation water ? Yes , I realize we were talking about the pollution of surface water , but if we are talking about water, how not to address water conservation ? As a Californian , I am very familiar with the drought that limit water consumption . So , for me , the discovery of alternative methods of washing the car is absolutely necessary.

Okay, back to the towels. It is running a load of laundry clean towels waters retain the car? Therefore, in order not to invent my own facts can be accused of , I'll move it to the International Carwash Association , which states that the average car wash at home using 80-140 gallons of water. Not sure if this is correct or not , it seems high to me .

How does this compare with the washer? According to Consumer Reports, and the Energy Commission Consumer Energy Center in California, the average washing machine uses about 40-45 liters of water per load . Plus use more detergent to remove dirt from towels where everything goes down the drain, they are treated by the sewer system .

You see , that's why I'm skeptical , spray and wipe products to be the right solution ? Also, I have not even mentioned all these plastic spray bottles that are thrown away and end up in the landfill. Do not start this topic.

I think there is a better way to do light cleaning our cars. Is carwash no rinse ( sponge bath ) , and there are two great products that I am aware that it is possible : Easy Wash ( QEW ) to Protect everything and Optimum No Rinse Wash & Shine (Fast ONR y) from optimal Polymer Technologies . Both products are widely Autopia.org by elements (mainly mobile retailers) used .

If you are not using the car wash process without Family rinse , simply mix a small amount of washing optimal or not Protect All Quick & Easy Wash in a few liters of water and use the solution for your car for a sponge bath to an area at a time. It usually starts at the top and down , keeping your wash mitt or sponge rinsed thoroughly go. After cleaning an area the size of a body panel and dry to prevent stains. In most cases , the process is faster than the normal process of car wash.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with David Ghodoussi , chemical engineer and founder of Optimum Polymer Technologies on the No Rinse Wash & Shine product. I asked the following specific questions :

DB : Non Rinse Wash & Shine cleaning properties , or is it a pure investment ?

DG : No Rinse have the ability to trap and soluble ( emulsified ) oil such as a surfactant . Moreover , you can catch and link to gently remove dirt and surface , something that soap can not do. This is not an advantage in discarding cleaning , why less water is needed .

DB : Is [ No Rinse ] completely biodegradable ?

DG : Do not rinse degrades readily biodegradable and 98 % within 24 hours . This is much better than most soaps , especially when you consider that just one ounce of this product per wash compared to 3.2 ounces required . Soap .

DB: No Rinse is not toxic to plants (in other words, if you throw your bucket of dirty water on the grass, the grass will burn ) ?

DG : No Flushing is derived from soybean oil and safe for plants and grass, so the wash water for watering lawns and plants, which is an advantage in areas with water scarcity can be used specifically . Moreover, the washing water in the sewage system , another means for safe disposal are all oil and dirt from the Waschprozessentsorgt .

DB : What do you think is the No. 1 for the no - rinse the car owner ?

DG : The biggest advantage is that shamelessly is safer for the new color systems than conventional soaps. As we all know , soap technology is over 100 years old, while painting the car became a sophisticated multi - layer system. No rinsing is more cleaning power , more lubricity, and leaves a protective film that created polymeric shine and softness to the finish. That's why you can not flush much less water and get better results than a traditional soap. As a couple of side effects, no purging help save water and impurities from automotive to protect our drinking water.

After my conversation with David Ghodoussi , and learn how safe it is for both the car and the environment , I am confident that the Waschverfahrenist without rinsing the solution suitable for the future. What are your thoughts ? Hit me up on Twitter.
